Lime plaster is a traditional plaster that is composed of hydraulic lime and non hydraulic lime, sand and water. It is very similar to lime mortar. The only main difference between the two is that they are based on the use rather than composition. Lime plaster contains horse hair or regularly just any animal hair to reinforce the plaster.

Hydraulic lime is a slaked lime used to make lime mortar. Hydraulicity is the ability of lime to set under water. Hydraulic lime is produced by heating calcining limestone that contains clay and other impurities. Calcium reacts in the kiln with the clay minerals to produce silicates that enable the lime to set without exposure to air. Any unreacted calcium is slaked to calcium hydroxide. Itis used for providing a faster initial set than ordinary lime in more extreme conditions.

Non-hydraulic lime needs air to carbonate and set. For hydraulic lime mortars, the lime is obtained from lime stone containing impurities. It is produced from high purity calcium lime stones.

It also offers a wide range of benefits over modern cement based alternatives. The use of the lime and its proven historical pedigree means that we might see a greater utilisation of these traditional methods which are employed with the greatest respect and most importantly the greatest integrity.

Lime plastering is primarily based in the restoration of the older structures which of late there has been resurgence throughout the UK. We ourselves as a company have also completed many restoration projects using the more traditional lime plaster to grade one and grade two listed buildings throughout the UK.

This type of plaster is a traditional material for period properties and is often required by english heritage in there refurbishment.

Lime plaster has been in use for hundreds of years a long time before the modern and more up-to-date sand and cement and gypsum methods came into practice and used for the more modern buildings that are being built now.

We can do Lime Plastering in London, Stoke on Trent, Chesire, Wilmslow, Alderly Edge, Knutsford and the rest of England.
